Short Description
Explore the importance of public health in fragile and conflict-affected states and understand how equal access to good health care is a critical component of post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding. Analyze short-term delivery of public health in conflict situations as well as long-term development of the public health sector and assess the impact of health care on government legitimacy and effectiveness.
Using case studies from Afghanistan and Mozambique, participants will learn how to manage the challenges, rewards, and trade-offs of efforts to deliver health care in countries immersed in ongoing conflicts, countries in transition from war to peace, and countries addressing the legacy of the conflict.

The Monterey Institute has opened our summer programs to undergraduate institutions and would like to extend an invitation for motivated and highly qualified undergraduate students to participate in our summer Peace, Trade, & Development Program, a four-week certificate program offered July 22 to August 15, 2013.
The curriculum is taught by Monterey Institute policy and business faculty and is both in-depth and intensive. For this reason, the program is geared towards upper-level undergraduates, career changers, and graduate students new to trade and development who are interested in building their core knowledge of this subject matter.
The Peace, Trade, & Development program is designed to expose participants to varied topics ranging from trade agreements and negotiations to multinationals, foreign direct investment, and international development. Training sessions will also cover trade-related environmental issues, labor standards, and the problem of money laundering via false trade invoicing. Groups will also make site visits to international agriculture, financial, and technology organizations on the Central Californian Coast and in the Bay area.

PALESTINIANS IN ISRAEL:

IDENTITY, PREDICAMENTS AND POSSIBILITIES

The Israeli-Palestinian (and broader Arab-Israeli) conflict is multi-dimensional, with many of its aspects and axes relatively hidden from the eye. One of the central and historically overlooked issues is the predicament and role of Palestinian citizens of Israel. While in recent years Palestinians in Israel have become more vocal and have more assertively demanded that their grievances be addressed, bringing them greater attention, this community and its issues have in fact always been core to the conflict.
This two week intensive study program focuses on the Palestinian community in Israel, and on the variety of voices emanating from it. It will examine their predicament and relationship with the state and with the Jewish community. In addition, the program will examine other dimensions of Israeli (Jewish and Palestinian) identities, and draw interesting connections between otherwise seemingly disconnected issues (religious-secular divide, “east” and “west” tensions, socio-economics and social protest, Jewish-Arab relations), to give participants a comprehensive, holistic, and highly nuances understanding of Israeli realities. The program may include one or two excursions to the West Bank and visits to East Jerusalem, though its main focus will be on issues inside Israel.
The program will include immersion in various communities, home hospitalities, meetings with people from all walks of life (academics, politicians, community activists and leaders, students, professionals, lay people, etc), and excursions to religious, historical, and cultural sites.
This program is open to all, but is particularly suited for people conducting research or internships about/in the region, who would like to deepen their connections to the regions and understandings of the core issues “on the table” in Israeli (Jewish and Palestinian) society. There is also the possibility (for additional cost) of being placed in programs/internships in the region, and of joining a unique comparative-conflict study tour to Morocco in August, for Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals.

Summer Peacebuilding Institute 2012

Intended for people active in peacebuilding and related fields, SPI – the Summer Peacebuilding Institute – offers three 7-day sessions and one 5-day session, each with five courses running concurrently. Courses can be taken for professional skills training or master’s level academic credit.
SPI offers courses that are useful and intellectually stimulating to anyone interested in learning more about peacebuilding and related fields. Participants are encouraged to reflect and to share from their own experiences in the “safe space” created by SPI. Minds and hearts are further opened with conversations outside class, laughter, volleyball, and group meals. More info…

Learning community

The SPI community is one of mutual respect and learning. An interactive approach is used in the classroom to draw upon the rich experiences of participants as well as instructors, but the classroom is only one of the places where learning takes place. Outside of class there is much informal sharing of personal stories, cultural values and new possibilities.
