Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia Communications Intern (Paid) – Summer 2014
About the Position We are looking for an enthusiastic writer with an eye for detail and an ease with both people and the web. This communications intern will help expand our capacity during the busy spring and summer months. This is an ideal role for a college student or recent grad interested in getting hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, or for a writer or journalist with a passion for bicycling. The specific duties and responsibilities of the role will be determined by need and the skills of the chosen candidate.
Timeframe and Compensation Start date: Monday, May 12th or later (flexible) End date: Friday, August 22nd or earlier (flexible) Hours per week: 10-20 hours, depending on availability Location: In the Bicycle Coalition’s office in Center City, with some time spent at events around the city.
Pay: The Communications Intern will receive a stipend and a generous credit towards a new bicycle if interested. Academic credit may also be available.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 A strong commitment to the Bicycle Coalition’s mission.
 Top-notch writing skills. People read your stuff and go, “Yep, that’s how it’s done.” You’re also able to write in different tones for different audiences.
 Social media fluency. You know how to speak Facebook and Twitter, and you understand the differences between personal and professional use.
 A sense of humor, a professional manner, and the ability to engage with a wide variety of people.
 Can work with limited supervision in an informal (and occasionally loud), bicycle-filled office environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
 Manage social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit) and monitor the main organizational e-mail address.
 Write organizational newsletters (3-5 month) using MailChimp.
 Write posts for the Bicycle Coalition and Crossing Paths blogs.
 Implement and manage web promotional efforts for specific events, news, and campaigns.
 Conduct interviews and write profiles of Cadence Cycling Foundation athletes and coaches.
 Act as “in-house journalist” creating written web content based on assigned topics or pitching your own ideas.
 Track local transit & urban planning news for pertinence to bicycling.
BONUS POINTS QUALIFICATIONS:
 College degree or currently enrolled in college.
 Experience with MailChimp, Wordpress, and basic HTML.
 Experience bicycling in Philadelphia and/or South Jersey.
 Journalism experience.
