Call for Student Papers! Deadline January 23rd!

Call for Student Papers
"Strategies of Peace: Transforming Conflict in the Modern World"
Notre Dame Student Peace Conference, March 30-31, 2012
Submission Deadline: January 23, 2012

The Kroc Institute is pleased to announce the 2012 Notre Dame Student Peace Conference, March 30–31, 2012 at the Hesburgh Center for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Organized by Notre Dame students, this annual conference provides a space for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in dialogue on important issues related to peacebuilding and current events. The conference committee is seeking undergraduate and graduate student papers, presentations and media displays—including photography, performances and films—that explore the various approaches to building sustainable peace in the modern world.

This year’s conference is entitled “Strategies of Peace: Transforming Conflict in the Modern World.” Today, we live in a complex world characterized by globalization, shifting ideals, technological advancements and changing social relationships, and these challenges force us to approach peacebuilding more strategically than ever before. In order to combat violence and structural injustice, we must integrate established methods and traditional skills with research into innovative nonviolent solutions and with education that fosters global citizenship and mutual understanding of the rights and responsibilities of all. We believe that globalization and the rise of social networking provide unique opportunities for individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations and nations to focus both their individual and collective efforts and resources where the world needs them most. With this conference, we hope to explore the interdisciplinary nature of peacebuilding and foster dialogue about how processes at various levels of society, from local to global and from the powerful to the marginalized, can unite to increase peace.

The conference will address a wide variety of topics related to peace studies and peacebuilding, particularly those that address the challenges and opportunities posed by the complexities of the modern world. Suggested presentation topics include, but are not limited to, the following themes:

Arab Spring
Peace Negotiations
Sustainable Development
Social Networking
Conflict Transformation
Education, Cultural Understanding
Role of Media
NGOs and Third Parties
Women, Children and Conflict
Global Citizenship
Social Entrepreneurship
Nuclear Disarmament

The deadline for submission is Monday, January 23, 2012. For consideration, please submit a one-page abstract or description of the project and a separate one-paragraph biography with information on your academic interests and background. Please include a project title, the author/creator name and the school in a header on all pages. Submissions should be emailed to peacecon@nd.edu as a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment with “Submission” as the subject line. Notification of acceptance will be sent once the review process is complete.

The University of Notre Dame Student Peace Conference is sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Funding for transportation and lodging is not available to participants or presenters, but meals will be provided and there is no registration fee. Questions may be directed to the organizers at peacecon@nd.edu.

entry-level positions for college graduates who are interested in international affairs and the UN

The Quaker UN Office

The deadline for the return of both the application and the references is February 10, 2012.  Applications received after this date will not be eligible for consideration. To download the application, please visit http://www.quno.org/getInvolved/getProgramAsst-NY.htm
The Quaker United Nations Office in New York is a program of the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) and is administered by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). QUNO’s work in New York is focused on a range of issues of interest to Friends and takes place through engagement with UN diplomats, UN staff, academics, and representatives of think tanks and NGOs. QUNO New York organizes and facilitates meetings, usually in the quiet, welcoming atmosphere of Quaker House. These meetings bring together a range of different actors, from the UN community and beyond, for informal exchanges on matters of mutual interest. Staff draw upon their work at the UN to inform constituents – Quakers and others involved in similar work – about issues of particular concern.

The permanent staff of QUNO New York consists of three UN Representatives, an Office Coordinator, and a Housekeeper at Quaker House. Day-to-day work takes place at the office in the Church Center for the United Nations, but many of QUNO’s activities and meetings in New York are hosted at Quaker House.

Program Assistants
QUNO New York funds two Program Assistants (PAs) each year to serve from September through August.  These are entry-level positions for college graduates who are interested in international affairs and the UN, and who have a commitment to Friends (Quaker) principles of peace, non-violence, and equality.  The positions provide those individuals selected with an informal extension to their education in international issues. Additionally, PAs gain the practical experience of assisting QUNO New York staff with program and administrative tasks. Past PAs have used their experience to continue on to graduate studies and careers in international affairs and other related areas.

Program Assistant Activities
The PA position begins in September, prior to the opening of the General Assembly. PAs work closely with senior program staff on QUNO New York’s core areas of focus at the UN. Time is devoted to familiarization with the program areas and tasks involved in program work. This generally includes monitoring world news and developments, attending relevant UN meetings, planning events, and writing up notes, and carrying out research. Guidance is provided through one-on-one supervision meetings and regular program planning sessions. Currently, QUNO New York works on issues related to the UN’s role in peacebuilding and prevention of violent conflict. These broad program areas focus on themes such as human and restorative dimensions of peace work, and the need to include all key stakeholders in dialogue at the UN. Work in these two areas makes reference to a number of geographic cases including Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Myanmar, and Somalia. The office also maintains watching briefs on Haiti, Afghanistan, Israel-Palestine, Iraq, as well as thematic issues such as Armed Violence and Development and Indigenous Issues. Priorities for work shift from year to year and are shaped by the needs and challenges at the UN and concerns of Friends worldwide. Staff work closely with the Quaker UN Committee, a group that includes members nominated by both AFSC and FWCC, to determine program priorities.
PAs also gain administrative experience and spend approximately one-third of their time on office tasks such as preparing mailings, filing, attending to phones, taking care of visitors and supporting the general operations of the office. PAs prepare for and participate in meetings organized at Quaker House and elsewhere. At Quaker House this involves assisting in meal preparation, hosting and serving guests, and cleaning up. They also assist in the ongoing QUNO New York program of outreach, helping to write and edit newsletters, preparing reports, and speaking to various groups about issues in and around the UN.  By participating in these activities, PAs learn firsthand how NGO's function at the UN.
Terms
Program Assistants receive a subsistence grant to help cover accommodations, food, and miscellaneous expenses.  The current rate is approximately $20,000 (US) per year.  AFSC provides health/medical insurance for the year, including coverage for physician, hospital, prescription drugs, and dental services.  Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements.  QUNO may be able to provide information to assist in these matters.

Draper Hills Summer Fellowship on Democracy and Development Program

About the Program

Launched in 2005, the Draper Hills Summer Fellowship on Democracy and Development Program  is a three-week executive education program that is hosted annually at Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. The program brings together a group of 25-30 mid-career practitioners in law, politics, government, private enterprise, civil society, and international development from transitioning countries. This training program provides a unique forum for emerging leaders to connect, exchange experiences, and receive academic training to enrich their knowledge and advance their work.
For three weeks during the summer, fellows participate in academic seminars that expose them to the theory and practice of democracy, development, and the rule of law. Delivered by leading Stanford faculty from the Stanford Law School, the Graduate School of Business, and the Departments of Economics and Political Science, these seminars allow emerging leaders to explore new institutional models and frameworks to enhance their ability to promote democratic change in their home countries.
Guest speakers from private foundations, think tanks, government, and the justice system, provide a practitioners viewpoint on such pressing issues in the field. Past program speakers have included; Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy; Kavita Ramdas, former president and CEO of the Global Fund for Women; Stacy Donohue, director of investments at the Omidyar Network; Maria Rendon Labadan, Deputy Director of USAID; and Judge Pamela Rymer, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Fellows also visit Silicon Valley technology firms to explore how technology tools and social media platforms are being used to catalyze democratic practices on a global scale.
The program is funded by generous support from Bill and Phyllis Draper and Ingrid von Mangoldt Hills

TransConflict during October

Dear All,

Please find below a selection of articles published by TransConflict during October. To read all TransConflict's analysis from throughout the month, please click here.

- Kosovo – compromise over customs now - by Gerard Gallucci - With the situation in the north having reached a dangerous stalemate, the need for a compromise – one that would help defuse tensions, and allow Belgrade and Pristina to resume negotiations on practical matters – grows ever more apparent.

- Brinkmanship in Bosnia-Herzegovina - by Ian Bancroft - Negotiations to form a state-level government in Bosnia-Herzegovina have seen the creation of two new constitutional conventions – the notion of ‘legitimate representation’ and the principle of ‘ethnic rotation’ – which will continue to exert a profound influence on the country’s politics.

- Kosovo – the EU demands surrender - by Gerard Gallucci - By accepting Berlin’s ‘Kosovo conditions’ for further progress by Serbia towards EU membership, the EU is in effect acting to impose Pristina’s rule in the north and pressuring Belgrade to simply surrender.

- Greece – Balkan dissonance and the creation myth of “Europe” - by David B. Kanin - Reeling European governments and the Brussels bureaucracy will become even less patient than before in dealing with a region where their serial failures to enforce their myth of civic identity and multi-ethnic integration have undermined the narrative of Europe as a united, just, effective and relevant international actor.

Great Resource for anyone interested in Teaching and earning a Master's Degree!

The Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that operates in the Washington, DC region (and soon in additional cities).  Each cohort participates in an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary, middle or high school.  UTC residents prepare to become highly competent teachers; in addition to the clinical experience, they also enroll in a Master’s of Education program that is directly relevant to the urban teacher.  All UTC teachers are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance:  only those who can demonstrate that they can improve student learning will complete the program.  Over time, UTC teachers will be among the most expert and results-oriented in the nation.   For more information, visit us on the web at www.urbanteachercenter.org or email admissions@urbanteachercenter.org.  Our upcoming application deadlines for the 2012-13 school year are:  October 15, 2011, December 15, 2011, February 15, 2012, April 15, 2012 and May 15, 2012.  The program for the 2012-2013 school year will begin in late June 2012.  The application is available via the UTC website at http://www.urbanteachercenter.org/

    Tips to help you prepare

    For school seekers

Over the years, we've received a few questions on how to best prepare for a grad fair so, we'd like to share a few recommendations with you:
Standard dress is business casual. We realize that you may be coming straight from work or a prior appointment. Admissions recruiters say they won't remember what you are wearing so, please feel welcome in whatever you are in.
Bring a stack of business cards or address labels if you have them (even home-made) with your email address and areas of interest. They will save you time filling out information request cards and are easier to read, which admissions recruiters really appreciate.
Check the list of grad schools attending the fair in your city to research and prioritize those that interest you most. This way you'll have time to talk with the admissions representatives and make a good impression with well-informed questions.
Leave your resume at home. Later, you'll have more time to fine-tune and tailor your resume to the graduate program should you decide to apply!
Bring a bag to carry materials you collect from the grad schools.
Let us give you the most up-to-date list of grad schools at the fair instead of printing your own copy to bring. Our list will have the grad schools listed in the order that they are arranged in the event space.
Give yourself plenty of time to get to the fair, especially if you are travelling by car. We wouldn't want you to miss our fair because of traffic or parking issues -- it's happened in some cities! Check for details on directions and parking at your city's grad fair page.
