YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School - AmeriCorps Community Projects Coordinator Position

The AmeriCorps Community Projects Coordinator serves a 12-month term (August 12, 2015 to August 5, 2016) at YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School, an alternative 12th-Grade-only, diploma-granting high school for high-school dropouts ages 18 to 21.
Background
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is a 12th-Grade-only charter school for young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 who have dropped out of high school. Programmatically, the School spans two years. During the first year, approximately 220 students alternate between six-week sessions of academic instruction and one of an array of vocational-training programs, including building trades, business administration, child development and healthcare. The students earn a competency-based high-school diploma, work toward a certification in their chosen vocational area, and serve as part-time AmeriCorps Members. In the second year, the new graduates receive organizational support as they pursue their postsecondary goals.
Job Description
Full-time AmeriCorps Community Project Coordinatorsat YouthBuild Philadelphia will have the opportunity to foster civic responsibility among our students, strengthen our community, and work closely with our partner organizations. This position is housed within the Student Life Department which serves as the hub of YouthBuild Philadelphia's school climate and culture. With the support of a team of individuals, this position will have development, management and facilitation of physical community service and service learning. The responsibilities of mentoring and extracurricular activities along with supporting other program areas in the efficacy of service accompany this position.
This is a full-time year-long service position paid through a bi-weekly living allowance AmeriCorps stipend of $500.00. Regular hours will be approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. However, please note that some irregular hours are expected for this position as events demand. Upon completion of the year-long service term, incumbents will be awarded an educational award as well.
AmeriCorps Community Project Coordinators at YouthBuild Philadelphia perform the following duties:
  • Coordinate the community-service efforts for the entire student body through classroom-based service-learning courses
Facilitate a service-learning course focused on social justice issues that affect residents of Philadelphia, and expose students to community organizations working on these issuesWork alongside and support students performing service while on their vocational rotation
Coordinate Saturday service opportunities for students by partnering with outside organizations and designing original projectsPlan school-wide, service events like MLK Day of Service, 9/11 Day of Service, AmeriCorps Launch and AmeriCorps Week
  • Support the school's Saturday-School academic-enhancement program
  • Regularly facilitate extra-curricular and student-engagement activities
  • Support the overall climate and culture of the School, including but not limited to, the utilization of restorative-practices for disciplining students, positive youth development practices and leadership development
  • Serve as mentor to five or six students
  • Tutor students through in-classroom support and after school on a rotating basis
  • Run student leadership groups focusing on student government and peer mediation
  • Plan student events, such as picnics, dances, and prom
  • Support students in post-secondary planning and placements
Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States

We connect local high schoolers with college student mentors, who  help them develop the “social know-how” skills necessary to succeed in the college application process, and ultimately, college itself. We believe in empowering students to take ownership of their post-secondary journeys.

MMP is looking for interns to assist in production or post-production for a series of documentary shorts profiling local community leaders, to be released in the fall of 2015. Interns will work with a team of MMP producers as well as local labor, student and community groups, and will gain experience filming and editing a social justice documentary.
We are looking for interns with video production experience who want to work collaboratively and use their skills in the service of social change. We are a small organization and interns will have many opportunities to learn new skills. Qualified applicants must have experience or interest in community organizing, and at least 1 year of experience editing in Final Cut Pro and operating professional or prosumer digital cameras.
Internship Responsibilities
  • Assist in documentary field shoots
  • Transcribe interviews and review footage for editors
  • Provide responsive coverage for developing stories related to local community organizing
  • Edit short documentary style video stories on a 2-3 week turnaround basis
  • Conduct field shoots to build MMP file footage collection
  • Assist with media archiving and equipment maintenance
  • Provide logistical support for MMP events and trainings as needed
Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Final Cut Pro X
  • Experience editing video in documentary, news or narrative formats

The Financial Opportunity Corps VISTA will work at Clarifi, a 49 year old nonprofit leader in helping individuals improve financial capability. The VISTA will manage a financial coaching program, called Clarifi Coach, to provide long-term and episodic support to Clarifi clients in under-resourced communities as they create and pursue realistic financial goals and practice new financial skills. The VISTA will work within low-income communities to form better money habits which, ultimately, will increase financial knowledge, confidence, and sustainability. The VISTA will also engage volunteers to support the coaching provision in order to increase the program's long-term sustainability and recruit and engage members of the community to become clients of the financial coaching program. The position reports to Clarifi's Senior Manager of Program Development.

Working at FIRE

Situated in the Old City section of Philadelphia, next to Independence Hall, FIRE offers a relaxed yet lively working environment with a staff committed to defending student and faculty rights on college campuses across the country. FIRE's working environment promotes a culture where the program associate will receive a well-rounded experience that familiarizes the individual not only with FIRE's activities, but also with the philosophical and legal foundations of FIRE's work.

Position Description

FIRE is seeking an energetic program associate who will assist with the coordination of FIRE's campus outreach programs. These duties include:
  • Recruiting students and faculty members to FIRE's Student Network through conferences, social events, direct outreach, and social media;
  • Maintaining and engaging FIRE's campus contacts in FIRE's database system;
  • Creating web content to promote FIRE's student and faculty programs, including emails, newsletters, web pages, blog posts, and social media copy;
  • Assisting with oversight of FIRE's Summer Internship Program for undergraduate students;
  • Planning FIRE's annual student summer conference and regional workshops;
  • Organizing, promoting, and overseeing FIRE's annual high school essay contest;
  • Assisting with oversight of FIRE's Speakers Bureau;
  • Assisting with FIRE's Guides to Students Rights program; and
  • Engaging with students to advance FIRE's mission.
Additionally, this position will perform other support functions for the day-to-day operation of FIRE. Working collaboratively with other staff members on specialized projects will also be required.
This position involves a moderate amount of travel, approximately four weeks per year. Occasional work on weekends and evenings should be expected, particularly for FIRE's annual summer conference and to represent FIRE at conferences in the fall and spring.
FIRE prefers the start date for this position to be early July. A specific date is negotiable.

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have a good work ethic, be a self-starter, and have the ability to work independently. Most importantly, the candidate must demonstrate a passion for FIRE's mission and an ability to articulate that passion in a way that will make others enthusiastic about our cause. A candidate must also be able to demonstrate:
  • An eye for detail and a drive for perfection when executing job functions;
  • An ability to exercise sound judgment;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
  • An ability to manage challenging and fast-paced situations;
  • Exemplary planning and organizational skills;
  • Strong copy editing skills;
  • An ability to handle dynamic, challenging situations; and
  • An understanding of social media and knowledge of how to use different platforms for advocacy.
Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of FIRE's mission and a willingness to advocate for that mission. In addition, candidates must demonstrate superior computer proficiency. Candidates must posses a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
Previous work experience is not required, but is preferred. Candidates with previous applicable work experience will be given priority. However, full and complete consideration will be given to all exceptional applicants.
